SNACK receives funding from Nike / Oregon Community Foundation for new GAINS program

We are thrilled to announce the start of a new summer program for 2017! Get Active In Nature this Summer (GAINS) aims to provide youth ages 6-18 in Yamhill County with weekly outdoor physical activity opportunities in local parks and conservation areas.

SNACK’s 2017 summer programming, GAINS, is supported by a grant from the Nike Community Impact Fund.

Why is being active every day so important?
Experts recommend 1 hour per day of moderate to vigorous physical activity, such as brisk walking, jogging, soccer, hiking, or carrying heavy loads. In addition to numerous health benefits that come with being active regularly, physical activity also provides fun ways to learn new skills, make new friends, and spend time outdoors.

Why spend time in nature?
Being outside is good for our health and happiness! Youth who have experienced or volunteered in nature are more likely to enjoy the outdoors, and kids who play outdoors tend to be more physically active and less sedentary.

The GAINS program is generously supported by the Nike Community Impact Fund, which will allow us to expand our physical activity offerings to include more sessions, more types of activities, and increase youth awareness of local hiking trips, volunteer opportunities, and more.

Summer 2017 GAINS schedule of events. Activities are all outdoors rain or shine! Some are free and open to the public; others are reserved for SNACK participants enrolled in the GAINS program.

Perhaps most importantly, we aim to show youth that being active can be fun, can look like a lot of different things, and can be done anywhere with little to no equipment. Let’s use the outdoors as our playground and gym! We’ll see you in the parks this summer!
