Why Kids Need Nature

Hello, Sunshine! It’s officially summer and we’re thrilled for a season of outdoor activity. Our outdoor physical activity program (Get Active In Nature this Summer) kicked off last week with soccer club and run club. This week, we’re adding in our first day hike of the season.

SNACK Day Hike at the Grand Ronde Reservation with Oregon Youth Conservation Corps members

Spending time outdoors in green spaces (forests, parks, trails) and blue spaces (bodies of water) is restorative and beneficial to our health, but barriers often keep youth from spending time in these healthy environments [1]:

  • Fewer than 40% of US youth encounter nature on a weekly basis.

  • The greatest barriers to youth spending time in nature is lack of access (no transportation or nothing nearby) and lack of comfort or confidence in being outdoors.

When children and teens do spend regular time outside, the benefits are tremendous:

Being in nature is good for you, the people around you, and the environment in which you live [2]:

  • Increases physical activity: Kids who have experienced or volunteered in nature are more likely to enjoy the outdoors, and kids who play outdoors tend to be more physically active and less sedentary.

  • Boosts confidence: Nature provides youth opportunities to learn new skills, try out new experiences, and gain knowledge in a more unstructured environment.

  • Reduces anxiety and depression: Spending time in green space and blue space calms the mind, can distract from societal pressures, and boosts kindness and generosity towards others.

  • Respect for the natural world: People who spend time in nature are more likely to appreciate and develop a sense of responsibility toward the planet.

Our day hike portion of our summer program (reserved for enrolled SNACK participants) teaches our youth about the Leave No Trace principles and incorporates volunteerism and conservation in the form of a work party at Miller Woods (coming in July!). Can’t wait to get started!

With love,

The SNACK Program
